Design and Build Process

British Log Cabins specialise in design and build log cabins. If you have an idea for a log building project, we want to be able to turn that into a reality. Each design and build project that we undertake follows a similar process from initial contact through to project completion.

Here is a basic overview of the process:

Contact BLC

The first step is to contact us with your enquiry and provide as much information about your proposed project as possible.

We can then begin to develop a design brief. We will send through relevant example plans, prices and photos to give you a good idea of the price and quality to expect. At this stage we will also provide a 'budget estimate' for your project.
Site meeting

If you are happy with your budget estimate, it is at this point that you should contact a local planning consultant (if planning is required). We will arrange a site meeting where we can further develop the design brief before producing architectural drawings for your project. We can also arrange a viewing of a current or recent BLC project by appointment, so that you can really get a feel for the quality of our workmanship.
Design and specification

As detailed on our Log Home Designs Page we charge a flat fee for log home and log cabin designs to include unlimited revisions until everything is the way you want it. This fee is refunded at the point that you place your order. As the drawings are built up the specification for your building will also be further developed and an exact quotation will be provided.

The plans for your home can be sent for planning submission by your consultant. If planning is not required then you can go straight to contract.
Building regulations and professional services

Before a log home is constructed, building regulations drawings and specifications need to be submitted to building control. BLC can provide services at this stage to include:
  • SAP calculations and energy consultancy
  • Structural calculations
  • Building regulations drawings
These services carry a further fee, this fee varies with the complexity of the project.

Our standard building contract has been specifically written for us, reflecting the way that our building process comes together. A building contract is there to protect both parties and provides the backbone to the agreement framing the relationship throughout construction of your project.

Read the contract and contract documents carefully. Although changes can be made at a later date, as the project develops alterations can become more expensive.
Order confirmation

With contract terms and specification agreed all of the documents will be issued for your approval. When the contract is signed and the 'deposit at time of order' is paid your slot in our building schedule will be confirmed. In the interest of fairness BLC's building schedule is strictly run on a first come first served basis.
Off site construction

All of our handcrafted log homes and log cabins are pre built in our yard in Shropshire. During this stage (usually at a height of 4 logs on all sides) the next payment will become due. At any point during the construction you will be welcome to come and inspect the work as the building comes together. While we are constructing the log work in the yard the footings can be constructed on site.

When the log-work is complete in the yard each piece is individually numbered. The cabin is then dismantled and loaded for transport to site.
Delivery and on site completion

On delivery to site the next payment will fall due. The log work is then re-erected on your footings and all of the other elements that BLC is contracted to complete will be carried out in a timely manner. The stage payments while on site will be split dependant upon the elements included in the contract. On turn-key projects a retainer is held for 90 days.
After sales care

If you ever have any problems we are always there to help. We have an excellent track record in after sales care and provide ongoing advice to all of our customers. We also offer structural warrantee insurance at the inception of the contract for further peace of mind.
