Handcrafted Log Cabins
A handcrafted log cabin is a cabin built in the traditional fashion, using full round logs. At British Log Cabins (BLC) we pride ourselves on our unique, specialist, artisan skills in producing beautiful buildings by hand from the raw material.
We pride ourselves on being the best, most experienced and knowledgable log builders in the UK. The attention to detail in our log-work is second to none, our team is trained with quality and accuracy as a priority ensuring that you get the best product possible. A handcrafted log cabin is the most natural home that you can build and has minimal carbon footprint. We only use British grown, sustainably sourced and meticulously selected Western Red Cedar and Douglas Fir in the construction of our Handcrafted log cabins.
We build genuine handcrafted log cabins using full scribe, handcrafted log building techniques and are skilled in many variations of log building. The most common style of handcrafted log cabin is the Scandinavian saddle notch method or Rams Head variation. The Saddle Notch and Rams Head notch methods are by far the most extensively used in full scribe, handcrafted log cabin building and are widely considered to be the ‘mutts nuts’ of log cabin building techniques.
The beauty of full-scribe log building methods is that every knot, hollow and contour of the log below is precisely fitted to the log above, creating seamless, air-tight joints throughout the building. With meticulous attention to detail in all of our log-work the finished product is absolutely stunning with massive logs faultlessly joined with minimal tolerance.
Due to the interlocking nature of the log cabin, the intricate notches used, and that the natural shape and size of the logs is maintained the handcrafted cabin is a stunning natural structure that will last for hundreds of years.
Our handcrafted log cabins are initially constructed in our log building yard in Shropshire. Once we have completed the log-work we mark each log’s position in the building and treat with timber preservative. We then take it apart piece by piece and load the lorry ready for delivery.
Working closely with our architect we can create stunning design features in our handcrafted cabins such as log stair cases and handrails, built in furniture and mezzanine floor levels. Once on site the cabin quickly goes together on your footings (generally constructed at the same time as the log-work construction in the yard).
As the cabin goes together the fitting team bore slots in the logs to conceal first fix electrical installations. When the log work is complete on your footings it is sanded, washed and treated with a second coat of preservative.
We build genuine log cabins using full scribe, hand crafted log building techniques and are skilled in many variations of log building:
Our cabins are used for woodland shelters, workshops, log homes (built to full UK building regulations) or outbuildings such as pool houses or luxury summerhouses. If you can think of a design then we can build it in logs!
